Boston's Bodega is one of the most well-known shops in the world. Situated in an extremely nondescript building on Clearway St., nearly under the Massachusetts Ave. overpass, if you didn't know what you were looking for, you'd miss it. The entire store front is actually a faux grocery shop and it takes going through a Snapple machine turned secret passage to get to the real goods. Bodega is no stranger to Vans collaborations either, their first being a Real Tree branded Chukka LX way back in 2010. Seven years later, Bodega is delighting fans of Steve Caballero's signature models with a new Asian-inspired collaboration with the premium Vault by Vans line.
It's hard to believe, but this collection marks the first time Vans has allowed a third party to make-over the Full Cab. And Bodega did not hold anything back. With the "Return of the Dragon" moniker, Bodega pays homage to skateboarding's original flying dragon: the great Steve Caballero.
Both the Half Cab LX and Full Cab LX are designed with exotic reptilian leathers, pony hair, and premium suedes. With this release, you get two of each model with the Half Cabs done in complementary, but definitely not the same, color and material blockings to their Full Cab ancestors. The pairs also alternate between black and full gum foxing and outsoles.
Bodega could've stopped there, but they decided to go a step further, adding an additional level to the collection. Along with the footwear, we get some choice Chinese restaurant apparel that come packaged in special takeout containers. Each shoe will also come packaged with a hóngbāo, or a red envelope that is traditionally given out during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The hóngbāo included with every pair of shoes contain best wishes for everyone, but a few lucky recipients will get an extra windfall of good fortune.
The Vault by Vans x Bodega Half Cab LX and Full Cab LX "Return of the Dragon" Collection will be available this Saturday, June 3rd, at 1100 EST exclusively from Bodega, both in-store and online. Retail is $120 and $155 respectively. Be sure to check out the video Bodega produced to commemorate the release below.
