For those who don't know, Karl Lagerfeld is easily the most recognized legend of design living today. He is the head designer and creative director for both high fashion houses Chanel and Fendi as well as his own label. With his signature white hair, black sunglasses-at-night, and black leather gloves, Karl's image is just as striking as his designs. For the fall season, Karl has taken his high-end fashion sensibilities and applied them to a few of Vans' best silos and apparel on what may be the biggest collaboration of the year.
The Vans x KARL LAGERFELD footwear includes six interpretations of Vans Classic styles, including the debut of the SK8-Hi Laceless Platform and the Old Skool Laceless platform, both outfitted in luxe leather with K-quilted stitching atop white platform soles. The offering further includes a solid black leather Classic Slip-On finished with K-quilted details. The Old Skool and Sk8-Hi Reissue receive premium leather uppers that have been outfitted with bouclé fabric quarter-panels atop a black outsole. Rounding out the assortment, Vans’ legendary black and white Checkerboard Classic Slip-On has been remastered with a Vans x KARL LAGERFELD cameo print.
“This exciting collaboration is a fusion of Vans’ classic style and KARL LAGERFELD’s iconic design” said Angie Dita, Vans Senior Footwear Designer. “Working in close partnership, our teams designed this collection to reflect the unique histories of our respective brands. As a tribute to KARL LAGERFELD’s fashion DNA, we highlighted elements like boucle fabric and K-quilted stitching, and we reinterpreted Vans’ signature checkerboard pattern with Karl’s cameo silhouette motif.”
For our part, when we heard about this collaboration, we were surprised that they were Classics silos and not Vault. But there's actually a very good reason for this. Karl approached Vans for this collaboration and wanted them to be accessible to the masses and limiting them to the LX line would surely detract from this. We got to get hands-on with these models at our recent visit to Vans HQ and they certainly aren't lacking in quality. Even the boxes are on point which is not something we get from most Classics collaborations. It's also nice to see the ladies getting their own hot collabs since they are all too often left out of sizing availabilities when these drop.
