Hong Kong actor, singer and CLOT co-founder Edison Chen opened ACU in Shanghai back in 2006. For the last decade, they have been a staple of the footwear scene in the city. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the storefront (and transition from brick and mortar to brand), they have teamed up with Vans on a very special Slip On.
The 大闸蟹, or "hairy crab," is a mainstay of Chinese cuisine. Some pay as much as $105 per kilogram to taste a specific variety of the crab. The Slip Ons take their name and appearance form this crab. Like the hairy crab, the shoes take on the inky dark green color on the vamp and heel counter. The ankle collar is covered in imitation pony hair which mimics the look of the crab's claws. The heel counter also boasts an engraved ACU acupuncture logo.
The dark mitten crab changes color to a deep orange/red once it is boiled for eating. The Slip Ons feature a very unique characteristic. The dark color of the vamp can be scratched away (or worn away over time) to reveal a similar deep orange on the vamp. This is a feature we have seen on other brands (like the Lance Mountain Nike SB Jordan 1) but this is a first for Vans.
Like the FLY collaboration we covered earlier this week, the ACU pair has amazing packaging to go along with the awesome concept. The Slip Ons come packaged in a picnic basket with special dual branding. Before you get too excited, this packaging is available exclusively at KAFFIEND in Shanghai and is completely sold out. The rest of the pairs will arrive in the normal red box.
