Japanese clothier BEAMS continues its 40th birthday celebration by partnering with the archipelago's cut and sew masters Sasquatchfabrix and Vans Japan on a new style of the Sk8 Hi JP. Going with a navy colored upper and contrasting stitching, Sasquatchfabrix decided to add their elastic banding to the tongue of the Sk8 Hi, a first for the model. Triple branded sock liners and a white mid finish this pair off.
We are a little late on bringing you this news, as the Sasquatchfabrix x Beams x Vans Japan Sk8 Hi "Oriental Skate" collection released on April 1, however keep an eye on BEAMS for a potential restock.
There are a few models that rarely get brought out of the archives for updated designs and the Style 72 Lacey is certainly one of them. For spring 2016, ABC Mart is stocking a few new designs but one stands out among the rest. For this pair, Van JP has decided to use a Native American style mock up by adding bead work to the leather lace. The denim upper creates a nice contrast against the brown leather and red beading. This is another one of those times we really wish we could just walk down the street to ABC and pick up a couple pairs.
The Vans Japan Style 72 Lacey "Native American" is available now from ABC Mart. There is no US release planned.
BEAMS isn't the only shop capitalizing on the 50th anniversary for Vans. Japan's ABC Mart has partnered with Vans Japan to bring an exclusive Slip On JP with the classic checkerboard pattern in black and white. This pair also comes with the awesome Steve Van Doren toy.
The Vans 50th Anniversary Slip On JP is available now for preorder from ABC Mart. It is expected to ship March 17th.
Japan retailer BILLY'S has partnered with Vans Japan for another collaboration that makes us weep. Arriving in black, white, blue, and red, the Era JP Half Moon Retro combines some of our favorite details: beautiful suede, thick foxing, and a partial toe cap. The model is very reminiscent of the Style 138, another style we would love to see get an OG release (Are you listening, Vans?).
The BILLY'S ENT x Vans Era JP "Half Moon Retro" is available exclusively in Japan from BILLY'S stores and online. If you have anybody in Japan who owes you a favor, maybe it's time to call that in.
Vans has started a tradition of honoring the Chinese New Year with models that pay an homage to that year's corresponding zodiac animal. 2016 is the Year of the Monkey, and for that, Vans chose the Sk8 Hi and Half Cab. For the color blocking, Vans chose to take design elements from 1980's Golden Monkey Stamp which popularized stamp collecting in Asia.
The Half Cab is the stand out model from this collection, with a patchwork of colored suede in navy and royal blues, golden yellow, red, and green on a white leather background. The Sk8 Hi has a very nappy tonal red suede upper and smooth leather jazz stripe.
The Vans Classics Year of the Monkey Sk8 Hi and Half Cab Collection are available now from Vans.com and retail for $100 and $90 respectively. Check your local Vans shop for availability.
I know we say this a lot, but when Vans Japan collaborates with Asian designers, they hit home runs. This project they have completed with artist and Rollicking's chief designer Shiro Nakano is absolutely no exception. Both pairs build upon a satin upper with Japanese embroidery paying homage to Mt. Fuji on the vamp. For the golden pair, Shiro and Vans JP went with a traditional Mt. Fuji design with accompanying pagoda needlework. On the black pair's vamp, a more modern look was achieved with a map of the island and Fujiyama script and vibrant colors.
Both pairs of the Rollicking x Vans Slip On JP "Fujiyama" are available from ABC Marts across Japan as well as online.
Two companies that are very familiar with collaborating on classic skate silhouettes with Vans are Patta and BEAMS. Next month, they will join forces with Vans JP to release the "Mean Eyed Cat" Old Skool JP. Comprised primarily of black suede with canvas notes on the upper, the white Patta branding on the sidewall really breaks up the tonal blocking nicely. The white and red foxing print is one of those details we really love and wish we'd see more of stateside. A red heeltab, dual branded sock liners, and "Team Patta" printed laces finish off this pair.
The Patta x BEAMS x Vans Japan Old Skool JP "Mean Eyed Cat"will be available September 25th at the Patta pop-up shop in Harajaku as well as BEAMS retailers throughout Japan. Don't expect a wider release to happen.
