Started two and a half decades ago, Modernica has revitalized and preserved the almost-lost art form of high-pressure molded fiberglass shell chairs. The form that was designed and produced in mid-century California had all but been forgotten until Modernica came onto the scene, using the same machinery in their sprawling 5-acre factory. This month, they are partnering with Vault by Vans, another mid-century California titan of industry, for a collection of limited footwear and furniture that blends both brands’ flavors.
Modernica and Vans presents an exclusive capsule of footwear and furniture to honor the brands’ timeless heritage in design and craftsmanship. Inspired by their always-sunny home state, the two California natives mold together to create a neoteric assortment of bold footwear designs, complemented by a limited-run of Modernica’s iconic fiberglass shell chair, custom-printed with Vans archival patterns.
The footwear offerings consist of three each of the OG Slip On and Style 36 LX designed by Taka Hayashi. Classic Vans prints make up the uppers whit Modernica branding adorns the heel counters and midsoles. Alongside the footwear, the collection boasts three fiberglass shell chairs that complement the prints. The Each chair in the extremely limited collection is hand made, piece by piece, right in Los Angeles. This is a special collection for me. I have always been really inspired and drawn to mid-century stylings and the combination of both world’s is really great to see.
The Vault by Vans x Modernica collection will be available on Saturday, 23 February, from Modernica.net as well as other Vault by Vans stockists around the globe. The Slip On and Style 36 will retail for $80 and $90 respectively while the chairs will be $500.
